Get Familiar with Kayaks in Our Basic Skills Classes

Many opportunities exist for people who want to experience the gorgeous landscapes and beautiful weather that Portland provides. Among the most popular activities in this part of the state is kayaking. While Alder Creek is one of the premiere kayak, canoe, and stand-up paddle stores in Oregon, we want to make sure beginners get the same attention as the experienced kayakers who shop here every day.

There are a lot of ways to get started on a kayak. We offer a handful of helpful classes for beginners, each of which is designed to help turn rookies into vets in no time. Kayaking is a fun, healthy activity that helps Portland residents make the most of the beautiful area in which they live. These three kayak classes for beginners can help those interested in the activity learn quickly and learn well.

Basic Skills Kayak Class

Our basic skills course establishes the foundation that all paddlers are going to need to safely navigate waters. This class covers a number of different topics. You will learn an introduction to basic equipment, paddling safety, and how to manage foundational kayaking skills. Foundation skills you will learn include launching from a dock and getting the body, boat, and blade to work together. We’ll even point you in the direction of some great starter locations for when you think you’re ready to try paddling on your own. These classes are offered every weekend, year-round from late spring through early fall.

Beginner Sea Kayaking

This full immersion experience will teach beginners how to kayak two and a half day course. This gives instructors more time to help students absorb the concepts of kayaking and to reinforce those skills. It’s a really fun couple of days that even beginners can enjoy.

Beginner Private Kayak Classes

We offer private lessons for those interested in one-on-one instruction. These private kayak lessons give individuals undivided attention from our instructors who can help master specific skills. We offer one-hour on-site private lessons at several local locations or pools. Our private kayak lessons are affordable, with discounts provided if the lessons are for two people rather than one. We also offer full-day private lessons for up to three people. A great bonus for those taking private lessons – there is no extra charge to borrow equipment.

Connect With Experienced Kayak Instructors

Either way, we want to help more kayakers take advantage of the beautiful Oregon weather this season, and our classes will help people learn how to safely use the kayak they’ve been meaning to take out on the water!
