Basic Skills Kayaking – DK’s First Kayaking Experience
In a recent Basic Skills kayak course I had the opportunity to get to know DK. Three years ago DK moved to Portland from India. Prior to our class he had spent very little time in the water and had never been paddling before. He was understandably nervous about getting out on the water for the first time.
Initially, DK was timid about paddling, but as we reviewed the basic strokes, forward, sweep, and draw, he began to move around with more confidence. The real test, however, was the rescue practice. After I demonstrated the procedure for getting back into our kayaks DK seemed anxious but determined to give it shot. When he first fell into the water DK reacted as any inexperienced swimmer would, and swallowed a mouthful of water. After he had a chance take some breaths he quickly collected himself. He went through the motions of the rescue calmly and was back in his boat in no time. Afterwards, he was able to run through the act of rescuing someone else from the water. I was extremely impressed with DK’s determination and will to push himself beyond his boundaries. Below are a couple of pictures of DK getting his first taste of moving water out on the Colombia!
Thanks for letting me be part of your paddling journey DK!
