Fun Water Sports Camp for Kids

For some kids, summer means days off from school, no homework, and vacations, but for others—especially those that live in and around Portland, Oregon—summer presents a perfect opportunity to make the most of the Great Outdoors by getting out on the water to do some kayaking or stand-up paddle boarding.

Here at Alder Creek, we offer both beginners’ lessons and day camps that help children feel comfortable on kayaks, canoes, and stand-up paddle boards, so whether it’s stand-up paddle board classes or a weeklong kids kayak camp, we provide plenty of opportunities to get kids on the water so they can make the most of their summer break.

The following is a look at some of the classes and camps Alder Creek offers in the area of water sports for kids:

Paddle Power Camp

For kids interested in paddlesports, Alder Creek offers a fantastic five-day Paddle Power camp that teaches children ages 10-14 many of the basics for activities like stand-up paddle boarding, kayaking, and canoeing. Parents can drop their children off at 9:00 each morning and pick them up at 4:00 in the afternoon, giving the kids five full days of immersion in the best that paddlesports has to offer.

Typically, we’ll start with basic paddling safety, then move onto other skills like maneuvering, racing, rescues, hydrology, and so much more. We’ll play games, get the kids comfortable in their kayaks, canoes, and stand-up paddle boards, and on the last day of the camp, we even invite the parents to spend the day with us to enjoy paddling as a family. It is a great way to get the kids out of the house for a week doing the sorts of paddlesports that can keep them in shape and ensure they get their daily doses of Vitamin D.

Yakatak White Water Kids Week

For children who want to experience whitewater kayaking, the Yakatak camp gets children ages 10-14 comfortable with the skills and maneuvers required for a safe journey down age-appropriate rivers in the area. We start the week with basic skills and safety, getting the kids into the calm waters behind our shop and in our warm pool. Then, as the week continues, we will spend our last two days at a suitable river location so campers can apply everything they’ve learned to a real-deal situation.

While the kids are welcome to bring their own equipment, we have everything they need on-site at no extra charge. We just want them on the water to help develop what we hope will be a lifelong love for paddlesports and whitewater kayaking.

Contact Alder Creek for Enrollment Information

If you would like to sign up your children for any of these offerings, contact Alder Creek and we’ll get them signed up for the class or camp that works best for them. We live in a lovely part of the country where these types of activities are available for children, so we should encourage them to make the most of the opportunity!
