Enjoying the “Awe” of Winter Paddling
I (Linda) recently read an article about the importance of “Awe” especially as we age. Experiencing moments of “Awe” have been proven to stimulate the brain. We should try to experience awe every day or at least several times a week. It might be a sunset, a child’s laugh, a beautiful flower, or a gorgeous piece of music. For me it is often something I see while paddling. Most people think about kayaking on a warm summer day but I think my favorite time to paddle is from October to May. With the right gear to keep you warm and safe it is fantastic out there. The other day it poured on us but the fog on the river was mystical. But today, the last day of January was nearly 60 degrees, the sun was shinning and the water was like glass. Soon the smelt will be running on the Columbia and there will be hundreds of eagles, and dozens of sea lions and white pelicans. I wish more people would sign up for our tours in the winter months so they could experience some Moments of “Awe” on the water.

PS. Love my Gear Lab Greenland paddle, low profile deck bag and spare paddle holder.
The right equipment really makes a difference!
