ACA Week With Eugene River House
Team Alder Creek recently made a trip down to the Eugene River House Outdoor Center to sharpen their instructional skills and connect with fellow kayaking instructors from across the region. The class was sponsored by the American Canoe Association (ACA)—but what exactly is the ACA?
The American Canoe Association is a leading organization in paddle sports education and certification. Their mission? “We build inclusive paddling communities, support excellence, and foster safety and stewardship through paddle sports education, competition, and recreation.” In short, they set the gold standard for instruction, safety, and curriculum in the paddling industry.
During the course, our instructors dove into advanced teaching techniques, safety protocols, and group management strategies. Now they’re stoked and ready to bring that knowledge back to our community! Want to level up your paddling skills? Check out the variety of classes we offer here at Alder Creek.
Certification Highlights:
- Instructor E earned their Level IV Swiftwater Rescue Certification and their ACA Level IV Whitewater Kayak Instructor Certification—huge accomplishments!
- Instructor Nate joined the class for a shorter period to renew his Level IV Whitewater Kayak Instructor Certification.
Instructor Nate’s Takeaways:
“Overall, I really enjoyed the class—even though I sadly broke my beloved Sweet Protection Wanderer II helmet. The best part was learning new skills and teaching techniques from a talented crew of instructors, all passionate about paddling. Everyone brought something fresh and exciting to the table, which made for an inspiring experience.
One of the highlights for me was paddling the Row River—it had a great flow, and we lucked out with sunny weather. We even spotted some awesome wildlife: bald eagles, blue herons, and my personal favorite… the belted kingfisher.
For gear, I used my Jackson Antix 2, Sweet Protection Wanderer II (RIP), Werner Sherpa paddle, Immersion Research Devils Club drysuit, and Astral Brewers.”
Instructor E’s Takeaways:
“I had a great time spending a week in Eugene hanging out with new and old friends, I feel like I learned a lot of new ways of teaching. Everyone there was an instructor already so it was great making connections and learning how they do things with their classes. This was also my first Swiftwater rescue course and man was it FUN! Who knew swimming and playing in the water out of your boat would be this great!
A highlight for me was paddling with my good friend Ge, who I have known for years but only paddled with for polo and this was the first time for me seeing him teach and be on the river.
For my gear, I used my beloved Liquidlogic Sweet Ride, Sweet Protection Rocker LE, Hardcore Mangu paddle, Kokatat Icon Drysuit, Astral Greenjacket 2024 LE and Astral TR1 Mids.”
