The Lumpy Waters Symposium is a skill building event on the Oregon Coast designed to take your sea paddling up a notch.    

Read on to find out more about the 7th Annual Lumpy Waters Symposium in 2015 and details about how to get signed up.

Step # 1:  Read all information in full and feel free to ask questions before booking.  We can walk you through the process one on one if needed.  Loads of information can be found under each blue tab above.   

Step # 2:  Consult the "Self Assessment Guidelines" below to identify what skill category best describes your current abilities.  Self assessments are rarely accurate, so please seek assistance from a trusted coach or peer.  We can also help you with this, just give us a call.  We will also require you to answer some questions about your current skill level during the booking process.  Please take time to answer all questions accurately and honestly.     

Step #3:  Decide your focus.  Do you want to learn to go on successful journeys or are you looking to improve your sea kayak play skills?  Or do you want to mix it up and try both?  More information about these choices below... The Lumpy Waters Symposium is STUDENT FOCUSED.  We want to respond to demand and student needs.  We will be custom tailoring our class selection to those registered.  

Step #4:  Once you have read all the information provided including the cancellation policy and identified your focus and skill level, continue with booking.  Click the blue highlighted dates on the calendar to the right side of the screen.  Be sure to enter any promo codes you may have.

Step#5:  Select what room / board option you want for the weekend.  For multiple participants, please have all information needed before proceeding.  It's essential that each person fill out their own questionaire within the booking process.

* Students will be able to adjust their schedules at the event each day. We encourage you to make your course selections with an open mind. Let us know if you would like suggestions about adjustments when you arrive.

* Be conservative when making class choices. Start slow and work your way up in difficulty once you feel things out. It's always better to be prepared for the class rather than playing catch up.

* Each class will be categorized as either "Play" or "Journey" focused; then labeled Novice, Intermediate, or Advanced Intermediate. Each class will also include a list of REQUIRED pre-requisite skills. Please take the time to determine if each class is really appropriate for your skill level. If you are not sure of your personal skill level please refer back to the "Overview" tab for definitions of each level. (Novice, Intermediate, or Advanced Intermediate)

      

STUDENT SELF ASSESSMENT GUIDELINES: 

Before continuing with the booking process, please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the categories below.  Accurate self assessments are important to you, to us, and to the other participants.  Lumpy Waters is an inclusive event, but by signing up you are assuming responsibility of making appropriate choices for yourself.  Some experience IS required to participate.  

As a participant, skill based groupings help ensure that you are learning at the most appropriate level.  When a class is too challenging or not challenging enough, effective learning is greatly reduced.  Self assessment helps us manage risk and allows participants to learn and perform at a reasonably equal level.   

Identify which skill category best describes your current level.  Keep in mind that most students greatly over-estimate their personal abilities.  Please seek assistance from a instructor, coach, or trusted peer if possible.  You should fulfill MOST requirements of the category that best describes you.

 

Novice Sea Boater: The novice sea boater has had formal instruction from a certified instructor or coach.  They can perform self rescues and peer rescues in flat deep water without going to shore. They can paddle forward with efficiency, maneuver their kayak on edge, and can move sideways using effective draw strokes.  Novice boaters at Lumpy Waters should prevent capsizing effectively in flat water using basic bracing stokes.  They are able to maneuver their kayaks in tight spaces and can paddle 6-8 miles in protected coastal or inland environments over the course of a full day of paddling. If you currently hold a BCU 2 star award you are likely in this category.

*If you do not meet these minimum level skill requirements, inquire about courses to take prior to Lumpy Waters to properly prepare for the experience and to meet those requirements* 

 

Intermediate Sea Boater:  The intermediate sea boater can perform all of the desired skills of a novice efficiently and effectively on BOTH sides.  They can paddle backwards and forwards maintaining a course in moderate wind (Force 3).  The intermediate sea boater should be able to roll their kayak reliably in flat water.  They are proficient with deep water solo rescues and towing techniques.  The intermediate has good group awareness, assesses personal risk accurately, and can travel well in a group of led paddlers.  They can perform skills in winds up to about 10 knots, moving water up to 3 knots, and swells up to 5 ft.  The intermediate sea boater can paddle 8-15 miles in a typical day and can hold a cruising speed of at least 3 knots.  These paddlers should also know how to operate safely in the surf zone with other paddlers and users. If you currently hold a BCU 3 star award you are likely in this category

 

Advanced Intermediate Sea Boater:  The advanced intermediate sea boater has a variety of experience in the cockpit and can perform all the fundamental skills and deep water rescues in wind up to 20 knots, moving water up to 4 knots, and swells up to 7 feet!  The advanced intermediate has a reliable roll on either side in moving water, wind, and the surf zone.  Paddlers at this level should be in good physical condition and can paddle 15-20 miles in a day while holding speeds over 3 knots.  At this level, students should already possess some good seamanship skills such as environmental / weather and sea state awareness, tidal and trip planning, basic navigation, applies weather forecasts, and is knowledgable about emergency equipment and procedure.  Advanced intermediates can help perform rescues in conditions including rough water landings, towing, and efficient assisted re-entries in conditions. If you currently hold or are working towards a BCU 4 star award you are likely in this category.

Course Tracks:

Each course on the schedule will have emphasis towards either Playing or Journeying.  The skill and knowledge sets required for each overlap, but the focus of classes and the sorts of boundaries that you would draw differ.  

Most sea kayakers have interests in both play and journeys, but often paddlers will have an affinity towards one or the other.  These categories will help to better indicate the intent of each course and will allow students to make better informed class choices based on their needs.    

Journey:

These courses focus on all the physical and cognitive skills needed to safely move from one place to another through a variety of sea / coastal environments.  These paddlers are simply trying to arrive safely at their destinations despite adverse conditions including dynamic and rough sea states.

Play:

These courses focus on mainly the physical motor skills needed to perform playful maneuvers on dynamic and rough waters.  While the emphasis is on motor skills, awareness and risk assessment of the play zones are also part of these classes.  If you want to park and play all day in one location these courses are for you.                                                                                       

Need More Info?:  

Playing / surfing requires a higher degree of motor skills, but typically takes place in a localized environment.  Traveling / journeying takes place in a much broader environment, requiring the application of more cognitive skills to avoid the need for more advanced motor skills.  In neither case is this absolute.  A play paddler on the sea must realize that this is a hostile, dynamic, and complex zone that requires a certain amount of knowledge and understanding of the envoronment to operate safely.  A traveler must realize that if they do much traveling on the sea, inevitably they will find themselves in rough seas or be forced to land through the surf and will need good rough water motor skills.  Each class will have elements of both motor and cognitive skills but the emphasis will differ.

ALL classes are subject to weather and sea conditions. We reserve the right to make changes to venues, schedules, instructors, and students at any time. We will not be providing refunds due to weather or sea conditions. We will work to provide safe venues despite the weather. By signing up you are accepting the risks with full knowledge that we cannot control guarantee safe sea conditions for all classes.

Cancelation Policy:
For all Lumpy Waters resrvations there is a non-refundable $100 deposit required.  The Pacific Northwest is a dynamic and often unpredictable environment. All activities are run/fun rain or shine. All programs are conditions dependent and may change at any time at our discretion. In order to keep our programs affordable a minumum number of participants may be required. If we are unable to fill a program to a minimum requirement level we reserve the right to cancel the program.
If you need to cancel, please do so by October 1st to receive a 50% refund. After October 1st there will be no refunds but store credit for future classes will be awarded. Transfers will be discussed and accommodated to the best of our ability. 

Additional Info:
We will be staying at the Cape Kiwanda RV Park. We have assorted cabins, tent camping and RV sites available. We have also reserved a group meeting room complete with indoor, heated pool access and a jacuzzi.

We have the space blocked out so you will be assigned a space/cabin upon your registration.

You can also book a room at the Inn at Cape Kiwanda by calling 888.965.7001 or make arrangements to rent your own house.  If you supply your own lodging in this way, be sure to choose the class and food only pricing option.

Event Check in opens at Friday at 8AM and CLOSES at 11:00AM at the Cape Kiwanda RV Resort Club House. Lunch is at 11AM followed by mandatory participant meeting at Noon. 

Students and coaches will meet Saturday and Sunday morning at the Cape Kiwanda RV Park Club House for a safety briefing and organizational meeting at 8:30am . Class rosters will be announced along with special information needed by all groups at this time. Classes will conclude each day at approximately 4:30pm. (2pm on Sunday)

 SCHEDULE INFORMATION:  We run what we believe is the most student centered symposium in the world!  We evaluate your needs and ability levels as best we can in the registration process.  Once most people have signed up, we actually build the event schedule to suit the needs of those who have registered! The official 2015 schedule will likely be out during the summer when the event typically sells out. 

Please stay flexible as conditions, coaches, and courses can and often do change at the event.  We take what the sea gives us on the weekend.  We will re-evaluate the class offerings each morning and evening and will adapt to the changing conditions. 

A reminder… Refunds will not be given for classes being changed or cancelled due to factors beyond our control.  Safety is our number one priority.

All are more than welcome to participate in “Yoga for Paddlers”  at 11:00am Friday as a way to prepare your mind and body for the Lumpy experience.  There will also be Yoga on Saturday and Sunday mornings!
We are utilizing the facilities at the Cape Kiwanda RV Resort located across the street from the Pelican Brew Pub in Pacific City, Oregon. USA! We have cabins, tent camping, and RV spots reserved and we will be using their Club House for meetings and meals (not to mention their heated swimming pool and jacuzzi).

THURSDAY: It is possible to check in to your cabin / tent/ RV site on Thursday for an EXTRA Charge. You MUST let us know well in advance and have the reservation confirmed through Suzi before October. (Suzi@aldercreek.com) The same is true for any drysuit rental needed. PLEASE let us know ASAP if you need an extra night of lodging or a rental drysuit.

FRIDAY: In the morning check-in will start at 8am at The Club House and continue till 11am. ALL participants must check in at registration upon arrival. Lunch will begin at 11am at the Club House. The participant meeting will begin at 12:00pm sharp. Friday's classes will begin at 1pm and will conclude at approximately 4:30pm.

Happy Hour is hosted by _____ Friday evening at 5pm so come prepared to party! Dinner will be available starting at 6:30pm in the Club House

SATURDAY: Check in will be open from 7:00 am to 8:00am Saturday morning. We will provide 3 meals at The Club House. (Breakfast 6:00am, Lunch 12:30pm, Dinner 6:30pm). Sack lunches are provided for full day off-site classes. Coaches will meet at 7:30am for a meeting. Students will meet at 8:00am for the BIG morning meeting. Courses will begin at 8:00am and end at about 4:30pm

Happy Hour is hosted by ______ at 5pm. Dinner is at 6:30pm

SATURDAY NIGHT: Alder Creek Kayak & Canoe will be hosting an all new interactive team quiz game! Participants will be split into several groups and will compete for prizes, honor, and immortal fame. Also, enjoy video clips from the first two days of the event. We work hard and play even harder. Come and enjoy the festivities this year!

SUNDAY: Is another day of exciting classes! We'll provide breakfast at 6:00am and sack lunches will be provided for all. Check in will be open from 7:30am to 9:00am. Coach's meeting is at 8:00am and the participants meet at 8:30am. Classes begin promptly at 9am. The event will wrap up at approximately 2pm.

-Taking your FIRST "lumps"?  You could take "Boat Control with Precision" on Friday, Saturday morning “Paddle on Edge and Beyond…” grab some lunch then head back out Saturday afternoon for "Fear to FUN in the Surf".  Then wrap up your weekend by heading back out to the surf for some more practice with "Fun & Feedback" on Sunday!

-CRUISIN for a Bruising …?  So you’ve never been to Lumpy but you want to make up for lost time and jump in with BOTH feet!  You could head straight to “Fear to Fun” in the surf on Friday morning.  Saturday morning you should go right back out to the surf in “Fun and Feedback”.  Saturday afternoon work on “Boat Control in Conditions”.  Then if you have anything left for Sunday take the “Intro to Rock Garden Safety & Rescue”

-PLEASE, may we have some MORE? So you are back for more of a polite experience?  Once you have been to Lumpy it's hard to stay away.  On Friday get back out there and review some surf zone skills by starting off with "Fun & Feedback".  Saturday step up your seamanship with the full day version of "Ninja Navigation and Seamanship strategies".  The sea is not such a mysterious place if you know what to look for.  On Sunday wrap up your weekend with an "Intermediate Sea Journey”

Things To Bring

Gear REQUIREMENTS:

We require all participants to dress for immersion in COLD water.  At the Oregon coast that means you should be wearing a drysuit or full length wetsuit with drytop or paddle jacket.  Please come dressed and prepared for cold water to prevent hypothermia.  

You are responsible for your own comfort on and in the water.  We highly recommend drysuits, booties, skull caps, and plenty of fleece or wool (non-cotton) layers.  Drysuits are available for rent from Alder Creek Kayak & Canoe.  Boats, drysuits, and other gear can be rented for a very reasonable rate.  There is no excuse for coming un-prepared for cold water.  Please contact Suzi or Paul to add gear rentals to your reservation.  Paul@aldercreek.com or Suzi@aldercreek.com

Please bring a HELMET!  Helmets are required for almost all courses.

Here is a basic list of the bare minimum gear requirements:

Please consider purchasing a helmet and properly fitting it prior to the event. It is your head we are talking about here… (We will have a limited number of helmets to load out).

*For any class requiring specific equipment such as rescues, short boat surfing or fishing please realize that we will be able to provide some options, but ultimately make sure you have what you need for the weekend prior to the event.

SPECIAL NOTE: We have chosen not to provide alcohol. If you would like to bring your own please feel free to do so. Aluminum, plastic and foil bags are easier to store than glass. Introductory classes help students learn a skill for the first time.  ”Get your feet wet” by trying something new.  If you have not had a class in a given topic before, consider taking an introductory class to start with before moving on to more advanced options for that subject.  These courses are perfect for the Novice Paddlers at Lumpy.

Refine:

Refinement classes help students master a skill they have already been working on.  These courses are perfect for students that may have some working knowledge of a topic but require more work to truely own the new skill set.  These courses are for those that fall into the “intermediate” skill level category.

Lead:

Leadership classes are for advanced intermediate paddlers that hope to lead others in coastal environments.  These courses will focus on the skills needed to safely lead other paddlers including navigation, seamanship, rescues, incident managment and group dynamics training.  Leadership courses require a high level of skill and awareness and are reserved for those best prepared to lead.

Paul Kuthe: The Pacific Northwest provides a training ground that rivals those found almost anywhere in the world. It is there that Paul crafts his own skills, as well as those of his fellow paddler. As Program Director at Alder Creek Kayak & Canoe, he enriches the paddling experiences had by all who share the water with him. Whether it’s dropping class V creeks or paddling out to surf a big set… combining a love of paddling big water, and traveling deep into the wilderness allows Paul to adapt and excel in varied conditions. Paddling has always been, and will continue to be, an escape, a livelihood, and a way of life. He lives to boat.

Paul came to Alder Creek  in 2004 at age 20 as an ACA certified whitewater instructor and worked his way up to the demanding job of Program Director.  He credits the BCU (British Canoe Union) for most of his modern coaching abilities.  He is a Level III BCU whitewater Coach and a 5 star sea leader.  He brings 20 + years of participating, teaching, and promoting paddle sports to the diversified job of planning, organizing and directing the educational realm of Alder Creek. Building and nurturing ALL paddling communities by studying many diverse disciplines and improving safety awareness has been a career goal for Paul.  Whether creek boating, canoeing, slalom racing, or sea kayaking, he feels a kinship to those who share his passion for our waterways.

Despite having paddled some of the most demanding rivers anywhere from a young age and making appearances in numerous paddling films including projects that have taken him to the very brink of what can be done in a sea kayak for National Geographic, and even gracing the pages of the NY Times in defense of free flowing rivers; Paul still feels that his greatest achievement has been carving out a viable living in this crazy business that allows him to spread the joys of paddling to people from all walks of life, while creating positive change for both the individuals participating in the sport, and the waterways we all love and depend on.

Karl Andersson:  Karl loves to have fun. Surf, games, coaching… we think he likes grinning at least as much as he likes kayaking, which is a lot. Karl is a BCU coach 4 * Sea and has been working with kids in competitive paddlesports in Portland for many years.

Jason Self:  Jason has been kayaking and fishing from a kayak since 2002, and has worked as a professional sea kayak/kayak fishing guide and instructor since 2005. In 2008 Jason began working for Alder Creek, where he currently serves as a buyer. Jason earned the BCU (new) 3 star in 2008, current CPR/First Aid certification, and current BCU Foundations of Safety & Rescue certification. In 2011, Jason was voted #3 Kayak Angler of the Year, and #3 Kayak Fishing Guide of the Year by Kayak Fishing Radio/Yakangler.com. In 2010, he founded “Out of Sight, Out of Mind” – A project to inspire people to remove trash from the world’s waterways with Chris Bensch and Shay Bickley. A published writer and photographer, Jason studied Environmental Science, with a dual specialization in Fishery & Wildlife Science, and Ecology & Resource Management at Oregon State University.

Steve and Cindy Scherrer:  Paddling a canoe at age 10 got Steve hooked on watersports and he has been an enthusiast ever since. Cindy started paddling when she met Steve in 1983 which launched a love affair with paddling that continues to evolve. Whitewater, flatwater, kayaks, canoes, creekin’, squirt boats, competition, cata-rafting, sailing, kayak surfing, sea boating… it’s ALL good. They were co-founders of Alder Creek Kayak and Canoe in Portland, OR and worked the retail/ instruction/ guide scene for nearly 20 years. They sold the shop in 2004 and now work as an integral part of the Confluence Watersports team. Working closely with R and D fine tuning and testing the design of boats and gear allows them plenty of opportunity to paddle. Steve is an ACA Instructor Trainer Educator in Advanced Open Water and Cindy is an Open Water Instructor and is excited to share her experiences of the mental and physical challenges women face. Making their home in Ocean Park, Washington allows them to paddle year ‘round in one of the countries finest paddling environments.

 

Sean Morley:  Originating from the UK and now a resident of Marin Co. CA, Sean began kayaking at the age of ten with the Boy Scouts and often paddled alone, exploring the relatively sheltered waters of St Austell Bay on the south coast of Cornwall, England. He was always curious to see what he would find beyond the horizon and dreamt of a continuous journey around every headland and across every bay until eventually he had paddled all the way around Great Britain. Sean took part in his first kayak race in 1978 and has competed in many disciplines of paddle sport since then including white water slalom and downriver racing, marathon, sprint, wave ski, surf life saving and surf kayaking with success at national and international level. He began expedition sea kayaking in 1996 and in 1998 set a record for the fastest crossing of the Irish Sea in 11 hours 6 minutes. In 2004 he achieved his childhood dream by completing the first solo circumnavigation of the UK and Ireland by sea kayak; the first ever to include all of the inhabited islands. The 4500 mile expedition took 183 days and is the longest kayak journey ever undertaken in British waters. Sean raised over £10,000 for charity and was nominated as the Royal National Lifeboat Institute’s ‘Individual Supporter of the Year’. His achievement was featured in the DVD ‘This is the Sea 2’ by Justine Curgenven (Cackle TV). In 2005 Sean assisted British kayak manufacturer Valley Sea Kayaks with the design of a new High Performance surf kayak called the ‘Rush’. He began participating in kayak surfing competitions in 2006 as a way of promoting the new kayak and in 2007 became the World Masters Champion and gained 2nd place in the Open category of the High Performance Class at the World Surf Kayak Championships. In September 2008 Sean attempted to break the record for the fastest circumnavigation of Vancouver Island. He completed the 700mile (1000km) circumnavigation in 17 days, 4 hours and 49 minutes taking over 6 days off the previous record.

 

Rob Avery: Rob has been messing around in kayaks for over 40 years! Starting in the UK as a boy scout then a K1 racer, Rob now enjoys paddling with his wife Kris, expeditions, kayak surfing and coaching for both open canoe and kayak. Rob loves to share his passion for sea kayaking and our natural environment; he is a BCU Coach, ACA Coastal Instructor, Wilderness First Responder and Leave No Trace Trainer. In 2003 he left the corporate world and jumped head-first into the big wide world. He owns and operates Kayak Kraft (www.KayakKraft.com) from Bainbridge Island, WA.

 

Jodi Wright:  Jodi is an avid kayaker who has been actively paddling since 2003. She prefers paddling active water like the Columbia River Gorge on a windy day, or extended paddles around Washington State’s San Juan Islands . Jodi started practicing Hatha, Power Vinyasa, Vinyasa, and Yin in the Portland area five years ago. She completed her intensive yoga teacher training in Bali, Indonesia this summer. Her approach is to keep the spine long and the breath steady during practice. She also likes to pass along postures that invigorate the mind and build confidence; keeping it fun on and off the water!

 

Matt Nelson:  Matt Nelson has been coaching since 2005 when he joined Shawna and Leon at Body Boat Blade.  In addition to helping students progress in their technical skills, Matt is passionate about getting students out into dynamic water.   Much of his coaching in the last few years has been related to rock gardening, surfing (both long boats and surf kayaks), and paddling in currents and tidal races, as well as the requisite skills in leadership, rescues, and incident management to safely paddle these environments.  Matt has appeared in Bryan Smith’s “Pacific Horizons”, has been involved with other kayaking films, is a P&H Team paddler, and teaches at symposiums across North America.  Matt currently spends summers in the Pacific Northwest and winters in Marin, CA.

“I get a lot of satisfaction out of sharing my passion and experience of the sea while making it possible for other folks to get out there as well.”

Matt is a coach level 3 Sea, holds the 5-star Sea leadership award, and the 3-star Canoe.  He also is a certified Wilderness First Responder.

Chris Bensch:  Chris is just returning from the Surf Kayak Worlds where he is participating as a member of the US team. He will surely have the latest moves ready to show and teach at this years Lumpy Waters short kayak surf sessions.

 

Teresa Flodin:  Teresa discovered her love for kayaking after taking an Alder Creek Basic Skills Kayak class in 2000.. She then joined OOPS (Oregon Ocean Paddling Society,) and in 2005 she discovered the magic of paddling the open Oregon coast with a private surf zone class. She began working for Alder Creek in 2007. Recognizing her love of teaching others, she started increasing her coaching skills in August 2008 with the British Canoe Union’s 4-day “new” Coach Level 1. In 2009, Teresa attained her B.C.U. 3 Star – Sea Kayak award as well as the B.C.U. 3 Star Canoe. October 2009, Tybee Island, GA was where she underwent the 4 day training for the new B.C.U. Coach Level 2. Five months later, Teresa successfully passed the Coach Level 2 assessment in San Diego, CA March 27, 2010 Teresa is now pursuing her B.C.U. 4 Star – Sea Kayak Leadership award. She paddles year round and, as the Columbia is in her backyard, she has tackled it in all kinds of weather. Teresa has also paddled off Gulf Islands near Vancouver, Canada; San Juan Islands, Deception Pass; God’s Pocket – Vancouver Island, as well as Oregon, Washington, Idaho and Montana lakes. Nick Jacob:  Nick has had a love affair with paddling his whole life. For Nick paddle sports began in the bow of an aluminum canoe with his father on Michigan lakes and streams, however his independent spirit translated into solo canoeing at an early age. Whitewater piqued Nick’s interest in his teens, and he guided his first commercial trip on his eighteenth birthday. Commercial guiding enabled Nick to spend plenty of days on the water surrounded by great paddlers that pushed him to explorer whitewater in both kayak and canoe. After four seasons guiding, Nick headed west to pursue greener pastures. Upon his arrival in Portland Oregon, Nick discovered a great new community of paddlers and great new boats; those designed to travel on the sea. While working for Alder Creek Kayak and Canoe, Nick has pursued sea kayaking along with whitewater kayak and canoe. He has also entered the BCU coaching track. Being in such close proximity to the sea has enabled Nick to make a quick transition to sea kayaking in conditions and made him a well rounded paddler. For Nick paddlesport is not only about recreation, it is a way of life. He is most content wet and worn from consecutive days on the water.

 

Annette Pearson:  Our previous program manager at Alder Creek Kayak & Canoe, Annette now splits her year between Portland in the winter and Guiding multiday sea kayak tours in Alaska in the summer. Compassion, communication, leadership skill and a warm smile are her teaching and personal trademarks!

 

Mark Whitaker: Mark has been leading kayaking trips and coaching kayaking skills on the Lower Columbia River and the Oregon coast since 2004. He is a part owner of Columbia River Kayaking, LLC in Skamokawa, WA. He is an avid Greenland stick user and builder of skin-on-frame kayaks, as well as a BCU 4 star sea kayak leader, and a UKCC L2 coach.

 

Jon Walpole:  Jonathan is a BCU Level 4 Sea Coach with a BCU 5 star sea leadership certification. He is also an accomplished expedition paddler. On his latest expedition earlier this summer he paddled almost 1000 miles from SE Alaska to Olympia, WA. His earlier expeditions include a solo paddle down the Outside Passage, a circumnavigation of the Lofoten Islands in Arctic Norway, and a journey along the Strait of Gibraltar from the Atlantic to the Mediterranean with a crossing from Europe to Africa. He has also paddled extensively in Alaska, British Columbia, Baja Mexico, the UK, Norway and closer to home in the Pacific Northwest of the United States. He has been an invited coach as several International sea kayaking symposiums. Besides sea kayaking Jonathan also likes to paddle canoes on white water rivers and lakes and has completed numerous open canoe expeditions. His latest project is to pole a canoe up the John Day River – the third longest undammed river in the lower 48 states. He is happy paddling solo or tandem in open canoes, decked canoes, or sea kayaks. He kayaks white water and has rowed a raft on a 25 day journey through the Grand Canyon of the Colorado. If he’s boating he’s happy.

 

Richard Davis:  Richard has been paddling since he was a youngster in both open and decked boats. He has an extensive background paddling whitewater, swift tidal rapids, and exposed open coastlines. As an avid boater/climber/skier Richard has participated in expeditions around the world, returning from each with epic tales of adventure and close calls. The rough-water conditions he routinely paddles have allowed him to try lots of different techniques and strategies and really dial in those that work for challenging environments. Richard currently lives in Portland, OR where he designs and builds paddles for Saltwood Paddles ( saltwoodpaddles.com).

 

Ron Wright:  Ron seems naturally drawn to water. He has been windsurfing for decades; starting on lake boards, and quickly graduating to the speed and jumps of high wind sailing in The Gorge. He started kayaking in ’03 to paddle with his wife Jodi (who didn’t take to windsurfing). He quickly progressed from flat water to active water due in part to his affection for wind and waves. Both Ron and Jodi have added white water canoeing and nordic skiing to their outdoor fun in the last few years. You might have seen Ron and Jodi at Alder Creek’s Paddle Festivals providing safety patrol and assisting with the rolling/rescue demos. Now they’re looking forward to participating in the Lumpy Water Symposiums.

Bryant Burkhardt:  Bryant has been an avid kayaker since his first day on the Pacific more than a decade ago paddling the swells off Catalina Island in Southern California. He is an ACA Instructor Trainer in both Whitewater and Coastal Kayaking. He has headed the UCLA Sea Kayak Program and currently is the Valley Program Manager for California Canoe & Kayak based in Sacramento. In 2006 he captained the U.S. National Kayak Polo Team at the World Championships in Amsterdam, Netherlands. In 2010 Bryant produced his first paddling DVD entitled Paddle California. Bryant brings his multi-discipline experience to every class that he teaches to make his students into well-rounded paddlers.

 

Jeff Laxier:  Jeff is a patient instructor, guide and mentor. Since 1996, Jeff has taught and guided kayaking and has fallen into a passion of teaching many kayak disciplines. In 2005, Jeff started Liquid Fusion Kayaking – a company providing instruction and guided adventures in sea, whitewater river, rock gardening, and surf kayaking. Jeff is a BCU Coach and ACA Whitewater Instructor and former member of the San Diego Mountain Rescue Team and the U.S. Marine Corps. Jeff currently resides on the Mendocino Coast where he has developed rock gardening adventures that are fun and accessible to paddlers of all skill levels and abilities. When it rains don’t look for Jeff on the coast. In the rainy season, Jeff rallies whitewater boaters and migrates off the coast to run Northern California’s creeks and rivers.

 

Kate Ross:  Kate is a picture of paddling and outdoor enthusiasm. Her life is about water with her work at Willamette Riverkeeper and her spare time as a sea kayak and whitewater kayak enthusiast. She is an extraordinary event organizer and has managed 150 people on the five day Paddle Oregon tour for the past few years.

 

Andrew Romanelli:  Andrew is a canoeist from the bountiful and calm waters of Wisconsin. The prospect of mountains and ocean has been a draw since his wee years sprouting across the pitch in the North east. Now amidst the dynamic landscape of the Pacific Northwest Andrew is loving the plethora of paddling opportunities and developing his sea and whitewater kayaking skills. Fresh or Salt, Flat or White, getting on the water is always and adventure!

 

Jamie Klein:  Jamie began boating in WV in 1990 and got his role in Feb 91. WVU Bachelor of Science grad in 95. Started boat hauling business in 96. Married Cindy in 04, daughter Caroline in 05, Moved to the NW in 06. After a million + miles around the great USA began working solely for Pyranha as the western sales and distribution manager in 08. Since then I have been inspired by the sea kayak talent I have been able to meet and paddle with. Now in a sea kayak I feel the urge to just keep going and going…There is so much to explore and Surf! See you all at Lumpy!

 

Amanda Cantal:  Amanda began paddling in the rivers of northern Wisconsin and began guiding in the Apostle Islands of Lake Superior. Over the past decade, she has focused primarily on expedition kayaking through the National Outdoor Leadership School which took her to remote locations in Alaska, Patagonia and Baja. Amanda moved to Portland in 2007 and has since worked on-water coures for Alder Creek. Within months of being in Portland, she found a new passion when introduced to surf kayaking by fellow Alder Creekers. She loves to teach and attributes her growing abilities as a coach to the British Canoe Union, with whom has her Coach 1 certification and is a 4 star trainee. She spends as much time as possible outdoors and when not paddling, enjoys fly-fishing, sailing and exploring the NW.

Dennis Pennell:  Dennis Pennell took his first paddle trip in an inflatable kayak on a class 2+ river in northwestern North Carolina in the mid-seventies. Day and overnight canoe trips soon followed. Then in 1984, whitewater canoeing became a priority, followed by whitewater kayaking, flatwater kayaking, and sea kayaking. In 1996 Dennis moved to Vancouver, Washington where he enjoys as much of the regions flat, white, and salt water as he can. He has kayaked and rafted many of the best whitewater river in the Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Arizona and Utah, including 39 days on the Grand Canyon of the Colorado River, and a trip on the Tatshenshini through the Yukon, British Columbia, and Alaska. These days Dennis paddles canoes and kayaks of all types and rows rafts and catarafts on multi-day whitewater trips. But most of the time he is seen in a sea kayak. Dennis is an ACA Level 3 Coastal Kayak Instructor, has a BCU 3 star sea award, and works part-time for Alder Creek as an instructor and guide. He feels that the Pacific Northwest is one of the best places on earth to practice this most excellent sport.
