Check out what we have going on this year:
Night Life & Presentations
Part of what makes the Lumpy Experience so special is the opportunities to gather and celebrate the challenges and victories had by all. We invite event participants to come and enjoy snacks, beverages and special presentations each evening to keep the good times rolling and create those special connections and friendships that make these events truly special. This year we have some great things lined up!
There is a Happy Hour each evening after the paddling is over before the presentations. We will have beer, other beverages and snacks hosted by the sponsors each evening. It’s a chance to gather together, swap stories, and share a few laughs with everyone!
“Sea Kayak Expedition in the Grand Canyon”
by Kim Grandfield & Gary Clark
What happens when a group of sea kayakers decides to run the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon? A trip of a lifetime! “Sea Kayaking the Grand Canyon” chronicles a two-week long adventure among 19 friends and 6 guides, for 226 miles on the river, through more than 100 rapids. The Grand Canyon is a special place. During the fifty-three minutes of this movie, you’ll enjoy the wonders of the canyon not only from the river but also from many adventures up its side canyons. By the end, you’ll come away from this show eager to sign up for a trip down the canyon even if you’d prefer to ride in a raft rather than paddle a sea kayak!
*Special Presentation by the U.S. Coast Guard is in the works. They cannot promise anything yet but we are working closely with them to try to make something really special happen. Stay tuned…
Ewan and Sophie will be at Lumpy in person to present their tale! They had an amazing opportunity to undertake their own self-supported, two-week sea kayak expedition along the Antarctic Peninsula. They filmed their entire journey and are in the process of producing a film documenting their adventure. Enjoy this special opportunity to hear the story from the paddlers themselves and enjoy stunning images and film clips from their adventure.
“Lumpy Waters VIII – The Film”
Each year we dispatch professional videographers and film crew into the fray to capture the magic that is The Lumpy Waters experience. Over the course of Friday and Saturday morning the filmmakers will be out getting interview footage, action shots, and some of the scenic beauty of the Oregon Coast on camera. Then, for the next 8 hours they will work tirelessly editing and piecing together a short film that will actually be played at the event on Saturday night! Talk about fast turn around time in the editing cave!!! Check out the videos from previous years to get a sense of things. It’s always a blast soaking in the good times from the first two days of the event.
Our sponsors are the best in the industry. Each year they step up and truly make this event what it is. Without their support we could not make this incredible experience nearly as special. In addition to coming and supporting the event they also bring some goodies to give away! In order to help bring the very best coaches in from all over the world we run a raffle each year to help offset some of the costs to bring this event to the community. This year we have some amazing prizes you won’t want to miss out on. Must register for the event to participate!
Here is just a sampling of what we will have at the raffle:
-Kokatat Drysuit of the winner’s choice!

Lumpy Waters is the most students centered symposium in the world. We build the schedule to suit those that sign up each year. We are always looking to offer something new and interesting at the event and this year we have some great NEW classes on the schedule by popular demand! Check them out. The full schedule can be found here: http://www.lumpywaters.com/schedule.html
BEYOND FUN IN THE SURF (NEW Class!)
Description: Wish there was a full day surf class to practice what you learn in the “Fear to Fun” class? After mastering recognition of hazards, holding position, and self rescuing in the Fear 2 Fun class; move onto this next step before venturing out beyond the break. You will work activities that create opportunities for practicing teamwork, signaling, launching, landing, broaching, maneuvering and surfing in the soup zone with lots of feedback and tips to help you along. If you had fun during Fear 2 Fun but want more time to practice this one’s for you. Have fun, gain some confidence, and become comfortable in the surf! Students should have completed Fear 2 Fun and be able to self rescue. A roll is handy, but is NOT required.
PROGRESSING THE ROLL with Helen Wilson (NEW Class!)
Description: This class caters to the paddler who is ready to move beyond the basics of rolling. Learning new ways to challenge your roll is a great way to be sure it’s reliable when you really need it. Topics that can be covered include layback paddle rolls, forward finish paddle rolls, norsaq rolls, hand rolls and beyond. The techniques examined can be used with any type of paddle and any type of kayak.
TRIP PLANNING & SEA NAVIGATION (NEW Class!)
Description: Start in the classroom then move the skills to the water in the afternoon! This course is designed for those paddlers carrying out coastal journeys. The aim is to give the student tools to enable them to plan trips and navigate while on the water. Traveling on the sea can be an amazingly rewarding experience, but to do so safely everyone should have on water navigation training. This course will be incorporating dry land and paddling activities to keep students challenged and entertained. See how FUN navigation can really be. Demystify the black art!
WET & WILDLIFE (NEW Class!)
Description: The kayak is an amazing vehicle that gives us a very special perspective and access to wildlife most people never see. Ever wonder to yourself while paddling… “what’s under there?” The ocean environment draws us in, but how much do we really know about it? During this trip learn from kayak guides (that also happen to be experienced naturalists and marine biologists) about the wonders of the plant and animal worlds around us. Learn to recognize and indentify common marine species while out paddling in the sea!
NEW Coaches coming this year:
We work hard to bring to you the very best coaches of any event. There is a strong community of returning coaches that come back every year (we can’t keep them away honestly). We also bring in new blood every year to keep things fresh and spread new knowledge through the Paddlesports world here in the NW. This year we have some amazing folks coming to make Lumpy VIII the best year yet! Just to name a few…
Meaghan & Ian Brosnan
And more… !! (We also have a great line up new Alder Creek Staff that will also be at the event. Check out the Coaches Section of the Lumpy Website to see the full list with Bios and Pictures of each coach at the event this year.
