Alder Creek Kayak & Canoe we strive
to be the best in everything we do.
Our instruction program is
structured around the British Canoe
Union Star Awards system. Classes
form a progressive learning system
that develops proficient paddling in
a variety of conditions.
Introduction:
No experience required to start.
These classes introduce basic
paddling skills and build an
understanding of general on the
water safety and environmental
conditions.
Foundations:
Prerequisite: Completion of at least
one of the Introduction classes.
Foundations classes develop
competence in basic paddle strokes
and maneuvers, wet exits and
assisted re-entries, general trip
planning and group interaction. When
ready, students have the opportunity
to gauge their progress by pursuing
the BCU Two Star Kayak award.
Refinement:
Prerequisite: BCU Two Star Kayak
award or comparable skill level
required. Refinement classes focus
on improving efficiency and
effectiveness of strokes and
maneuvers. They also prepare
students in intermediate skills
including, paddling in moderate
current and waves, trip planning,
and basic seamanship. On completion
of these classes students have the
opportunity to pursue their BCU
Three Star Kayak award.
Environment-Specific:
Prerequisite: BCU Three Star Kayak
award required. Courses in this
group help students develop
competence in advanced paddle skills
in open water conditions, comfort in
current, wind, surf and rough
conditions, expedition planning,
navigation experience and an
understanding of group dynamics. A
BCU Four Star Sea Kayak assessment
is offered when paddlers have
mastered these skills.
Leadership:
BCU Four Star Sea Kayak award
required. These courses focus on
advanced skills and paddling mastery
in rough conditions combined with
the judgment and ability to lead and
make decisions for a group. Once
paddling skills, rescues, group
management and navigation in
advanced sea conditions are all
second nature, students can pursue
the official training and assessment
requirements for their BCU Five Star
Sea Kayak award.
