This multi-session
class involves an evening classroom
session plus a full day on the
water. The classroom sessions will
build on the material introduced in
Navigation & Seamanship 1. We will
extend the concepts learned in the
first class with an introduction to
tides and tidal currents, and give
students practice using tidal
current atlases and tidal prediction
tools and methods. We will cover the
impact of tidal currents on trip
planning and navigation, and explain
how to use vector solutions to
determine correct ferry angles for
long crossings with tidal currents.
We will also introduce the
fundamentals of navigation by dead
reckoning, and explain some of the
special considerations of navigating
in poor visibility such as in fog.
We will also outline how to plan an
extended trip. Then we will use
charts, tide and current tables, and
hypothetical weather forecasts to
plan a variety of interesting trips.
The full day class on
open water puts into practice the
skills learned in the Navigation and
Seamanship 1 & 2 classes. We will
complete a day long trip in an area
requiring navigation by piloting.
Students will be actively involved
in navigating throughout the day
using the full range of skills
learned in the classroom. Due to the
nature of the open water
environment, this navigation may
take place in windy and choppy
conditions, perhaps with poor
visibility due to rain or fog. The
class will take place in daylight
hours.
Intro. to Navigation & Seamanship is
scheduled periodically throughout
the year. Call to reserve your spot
in the next class.
