This full
day class, held in sheltered
water, will introduce you to a wide
range of deep-water rescue
techniques for solo and group
paddlers. You will learn and
practice numerous self rescue
techniques.
We will also cover assisted
rescues involving two or more
paddlers, including those dealing
with injured or incapacitated
paddlers.
We will refine assisted drain
and reenter rescues and show how
they can be applied to different
kinds of kayaks, such as tandems or
those without bulkheads. We will
also cover a variety of swimmer
rescues, contact tows, and teach the
proper use of tow-lines and various
methods of solo and assisted towing.
A key element of the class will be a
discussion of the appropriate rescue
for different situations. This class
includes the BCU Canoe Safety Test
certification.
The BCU Canoe Safety Test will be
scheduled a couple of times during
the summer and fall. Call to reserve
your spot in the next Canoe Safety
Test.

On The
Water, You Will Need:

Tennis shoes or river sandals with
wool socks or wetsuit booties

Sunglasses with retention device
(i.e. Croakies, Chums, etc)

Sunscreen (SPF 30), lip balm (SPF
15)

Sun hat, rain hat, and/or fleece hat
-
Synthetic top and bottom (thermal
underwear, heavier wt. for cooler
weather)

Rain coat and rain pants
-
Nylon shorts and/or swimsuit
-
Water bottle (1 quart)
-
Towel and change of clothes for ride
home - Lunch and snacks.
Meeting
Place/Directions:
Participants in the
Canoe Safety Test will meet at the
Jantzen Beach store in N. Portland.
You will receive detailed
instructions and a map with your
confirmation packet.
