Northwest Creeking Competition 2016

Team Alder Creek made it out in record numbers this year to the 100% volunteer-run Northwest Creeking Competition!  This annual spring event is a blast for whitewater paddlers and spectators.  This two-day celebration of creekin’ typically involves races on Saturday on the East Fork of the Lewis River and a Sunday race nearby on Canyon Creek.

IMG_3316

Despite all the rain and snow this winter, river levels were still unseasonably low, and Sunday’s race on Canyon Creek was cancelled.  Most races still ran on Saturday, and Chris, Steve, and Andrew all participated!  Due to a shoulder injury, this was Paul’s first year in 12 that he didn’t race.  The rest of us may not be as fast, but we did our best!  Chris entered in Pro, Andrew entered in Expert, and for Steve’s first year racing, he entered Fun class.  All had pretty good lines, with some room for improvement.  Steve even took 3rd place in Fun class!

RNR Act

Wyden, Blumenauer Introduce Bill to Open Access to Outdoor Recreation

Bill Supported by more than 50 Outdoor Industry Groups, Implements Ideas from Oregonians to Remove Barriers to Recreation

Washington, D.C. – Oregon Sen. Ron Wyden and Rep. Earl Blumenauer today introduced legislation to increase outdoor recreation access for visitors and boost rural economies in Oregon and nationwide.

Based on input from Oregonians about how to remove bureaucratic roadblocks to public lands, the Recreation Not Red-Tape (RNR) Act expands outdoor recreation opportunities for all Americans, especially underserved communities such as veterans, seniors and young people, for the first time holds federal agencies accountable for making outdoor recreation a priority and helps maintain America’s public lands.

The bill is based on draft legislation Wyden released last fall and on concerns Wyden and Blumenauer heard during a series of listening sessions they held on a statewide tour of Oregon ’s Seven Wonders last summer to gather ideas about how to open access to outdoor recreation.

“It’s time for fresh recreation policies that cut through the bureaucratic red tape that chokes off opportunities for recreation in Oregon and across the country and clears the path for first-time visitors, fresh economic opportunity and new jobs in rural communities,” Wyden said. “The RNR Act puts to work the creative ideas I heard from Oregonians about how to streamline the process when it comes to opening up access to our great outdoor places.”

“Oregonians love the outdoors – it’s who we are; it’s in our DNA. From the magnificent Columbia River Gorge to lesser known trails and creeks throughout our forests, canyons, and deserts, we’re fortunate to be surrounded by places for hiking, nature-watching, biking, and other activities,” Blumenauer said. “Unfortunately, they’re not always easily accessible. Our legislation changes that, removing burdensome barriers and helping support recreation programs so that people in Oregon and across America can more easily get out to enjoy the great outdoors.”

The “RNR” Act expedites the permitting process for recreation guides and makes it easier for visitors to get recreation use permits by making all park passes available online. The bill also focuses on getting more veterans, seniors and young people outdoors by encouraging all military branches to provide servicemembers and veterans with information about outdoor recreation, encouraging more outdoor recreation and volunteer opportunities for people 55 and older and by making a certain number of free park passes available to low-income schools.

The bill requires the Army Corps of Engineers, Bureau of Reclamation and the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission to promote recreation when making land and water management decisions. It also directs the federal land management agencies to find new ways to extend recreation seasons in a sustainable way.

The bill helps maintain public lands by encouraging more volunteers to assist with trail maintenance projects and by requiring the Bureau of Land Management and the Forest Service to choose up to 15 trails for prioritized maintenance.

The bill is supported by more than 50 outdoor industry groups, including the Outdoor Industry Association, American Whitewater and the National Ski Area Association, as well as Oregon-based companies like KEEN and Columbia Sportswear.

Todd Davidson, CEO of Travel Oregon , called the bill a huge win for outdoor enthusiasts and tourism.

“Outdoor recreation is a vital component of the travel and tourism sector, which generates $2.1 trillion in economic output and supports 15 million jobs nationally, with $10.3 billion and more than 101,000 jobs in Oregon alone,”Davidson said. “Senator Wyden and Representative Blumenauer have recognized the important role outdoor recreation plays in the nation’s economy and job creation in largely rural areas, and have worked to enhance its impact through the introduction of this bill.”

The bill would also direct the federal land management agencies to study the full impacts of outdoor recreation on the economy, including how recreation creates job growth, tourism opportunities and boosts local economies.

Portland Boathouse Location Closing March 31, 2016

Newsletter Alder Creek

Alder Creek Kayak & Canoe is closing the Boathouse Location at 1515 SE Water Ave, Portland Oregon

Portland, March 1, 2016 – After a 12 year run Alder Creek Kayak & Canoe will close the Portland Boathouse location permanently as of March 31, 2016. All other locations to continue unaffected by this closure.

The Alder Creek flagship store at 200 NE Tomahawk Island Dr Portland, OR 97217 and our 4 Rental/Lesson/Tour locations in Ridgefield, WA; Tryon Cove and George Rogers Park in Lake Oswego and Browns Ferry Park in Tualatin continue to operate normally.

“There are two in-water projects that make operating in 2016 a challenge. The dock is being repaired in March and an in-water cleanup project in July & August will keep us off the water and unable to do rentals or tours at this location”  Dave Slover – Owner Alder Creek Kayak & Canoe

“While it’s a bummer to lose such a great spot so close to downtown it’s never been exactly what we needed down there. Inadequate parking, an increase in homeless camps and a long carry to the water are all issues at this location. “  Paul Kuthe – Programs Manager at Alder Creek.

Alder Creek Kayak & Canoe has been in business 30 years in the Portland area.  They continue to be an industry leader and the premiere kayak, canoe & stand up paddle store and paddling school in Oregon.

Davenport Paddle Surf Contest 2015

12240461_10206470716301013_1536866845105941741_o

This year Davenport Paddle Surf Contest was one for the record books! I was definitely taken to the edge of conditions I’m willing to surf in…had it not been a competition, I would have just drank a beer on the beach. Let alone the fact I just unwrapped my new surf kayak, which Mat Hoff had spent the whole day prior getting our new boats from customs. The boat was not outfitted for me at all. I couldn’t even get the back band to touch. I made it to the beach half way through the heat and was still able to eek out a 2nd place. The only one’s willing to paddle out for the next heat were Dan Crandall and myself. The surf was large and was building, and the other competitors drank a beer on the beach… As I’m waiting for the heat to begin, Dan paddles up and says “it’s about to get real big (it was already huge) as the tide drops”, that didn’t help any… A little nervous but trusting in my skills, I positioned myself for the waves I wanted to catch. When paddling out in these conditions you have to realize that getting caught on the inside is likely a situation you will face. The wall of whitewater wasn’t so much the intimidating part but the 100′ cliff just 300′ behind me. When in this position you have 3 options, 1-try to catch and surf it in until it’s weaker on the inside (likely take you for a ride…aka rag dolled). 2-roll over right as the wave hits you (duck dive) and then roll up on the back side (won’t work with a 40′ deep foam pile, also rag dolled). 3-Bunny hop, which is what I tried, where you get the nose of the boat up right as the foam pile hits then you get all your weight forward and it launches you up and over the foam pile…this didn’t work…it flipped me over backwards but I was able to right the boat and surf down the foam pile. After trying to break free from the wave 3 or 4 times,  I was finally able to break free about 30′ from the beginning of the rocks. Not only did I survive the heat, I ended up winning the mano-a-mano battle with veteran surfer Dan Crandall. This was my first win in my new surf boat the Ghost from Mega Surf Kayaks. Now time to outfit the boat!
Special thanks to photographers Mark Boyd and Vincent Shay

Alder Creek would like to extend a HUGE thank YOU to the folks who make our Lumpy Waters Symposium possible!!

Thank you to our staff who believe!!

An ENORMOUS thanks to the coaches, staff and volunteers who are on site at Lumpy! Leading classes, assisting classes, filming, outfitting boats, loading boats, doing dishes, fitting helmets, working registration, organizing vehicles, driving shuttles, organizing students, organizing coaches, smiling, having fun and MAKING FUN happen. Endless work and Endless magic. Thank you.

A very special Thanks goes out to our manufacturers and vendors who support this event in ways too numerous to list. They truly make it possible and comfortable and certainly add a BIG FUN factor with the raffle items, beverage cups, drysuits, kayaks, hats, DVDs and endless schwag. Plus they are there to work and help which is priceless.
Thank you so much TEAM ALDER CREEK!

The Students are the MOST special part of Lumpy each year, bringing their enthusiasm and goals to the Oregon Coast with open eyes and rapidly beating hearts.
A brave bunch of paddlers putting their trust in the coach’s vision hoping for a break through moment or their first surf or improving their forward stroke or mastering that elusive roll.
Thank you for the chance to splash, cheer and laugh together.

See you next year!!

Thank YOU all
Dave and Suzi

Some Positive Feedback:

Paul,
My son and I both had an awesome time at our first but not last Lumpy Waters. The coaches, sponsors and kayak comunity make it impossible not to have the best learning and all-round good time of the year. Things I liked: 1. The quality of the coaches and their ability to share their skills with kayakers new to the surf environment. Fear to fun was perfect for that. 2. The venues were varried for novice and advanced paddler. Some very close to camp. I liked hearing the surf at night when going to sleep. 3. The afternoon happy hour and evening activities where a BLAST!! Thanks to the sponsors and enthusiastic coaches.
Things to improve, I would like to see fun and feed back increase to a full day. We ran out of time before we had a chance to practice some of what was taught. 2. Maps of the different venue locations. I got separated from the group due to stop lights and had a tough time finding the launch.
Thanks for a fantastic program,
Larry

Suzi, thanks to you and Paul for all the hard work you put in at Lumpy Waters. Being there for the first time made me appreciate all the logistical work behind it. I really enjoyed it and plan to return next year.
David S

Suzi,
Had a great time at Lumpy. Nick Cunliff was awesome. I would endorse his return.
By now you should be relaxed and relishing the accomplishment of a very successful Lumpy. You and Paul should be very proud.
Donna S

Excellent class. Chris did a great job. Thanks for making it happen.
Margaret

Paul (and staff),
I had a great time at my first Lumpy. I couldn’t begin to offer suggestions for improvement. You guys have this put together so well- its an impressive experience to be a part of. Do the things you guys need to do to make the job easier on yourselves so we all can continue to benefit from such a valuable event.
The video preview was huge. Such a quality capturing of the feeling of what we were all involved in. I’m sharing it with everyone.
I look forward to many more Lumpy’s.
Thank you,
Kevin M

Thanks so much, Paul. First let me just say that Lumpy was awesome and I plan to return next year. I really appreciated the variety of options and the great venues and awesome coaches.
Again, thanks so much for all your work.
Laverne

Suzi –
Just another quick shout out that I had a really enjoyable time (and learned a lot!) at both BCU week and Lumpy. Thanks to you and all of the Alder Creek team for putting on such an excellent event. I know you are recovering and have to be exhausted. I certainly appreciate all the work put in.
Thanks again for a wonderful event!
Kate

Suzi
Now I can see why everyone talks about Lumpy. The entire weekend was superb–the boating, the coaches, the lodging, the food and your flawless organization.
Thanks much; hope to come back up next year.
Jane

Hi
I want to thank you for getting Jeannie involved in Sunday’s activities. She had fun.
Putting Lumpy on was certainly a high energy effort and without the energy it wouldn’t be as successful as it was. Quality of instruction and general support of participants with food and evening activities keeps all focused on why we are there. Thank you.
Roger

Hi Paul, I just wanted to take a moment to tell you how much we enjoyed our time at Lumpy Waters. An amazing staff and great organization made this event really function. On top of that, the level of instruction was superb as was the level of comraderie. My Wife Claire and I were attending for the first time and we feel we gained so much kayaking knowledge as well as a great view of what it means to be part of the kayaking community. Thanks so much to you, the owners and of course Suzi and all the staff for making it happen. We are looking forward to next year. Mike

Paul, Dave and Suzi,
I wanted to thank you guys again for including me in your event. Very impressive again this year. I personally saw a lot of folks making big progress on their personal kayak skills in a short time. Your unique idea to allow so much real time changing to different classes goes a long ways toward creating a positive feeling towards the event.
Kim G

Suzi Just a super thanks for everything !

Suzi and Paul,
Thank you for a great event. I really enjoyed it.
Jay

Hey Paul,
Great event!
I’m looking at the questions you wanted answered and honestly can’t think of anyway to improve the event. Everything from the scheduling of classes to the wonderful people there would be hard to improve on. Thanks for letting me be part of this event! I would love to come back next year if there is room.
Bill

Hey Paul!
Just wanted to say thanks for inviting me up again, I had a blast and was happy to be a part of a great event. The classes went really well, Ryan and Malcom were great to work with and you have a great crew at Alder Creek too. I heard several students comment on how much they liked having lots of instructors on each class so they could get some more individualized instruction, and I think that worked really well in each class I was a part of. The Pub Quiz and the presentation were great, and having an open happy hour was a big hit. I think you guys have the entertainment down really well, it was great to see a really good venue where everything can be contained on site. I heard nothing but good feedback from students all weekend, people were really happy. I liked the duct tape on people’s helmets so the coaches could see names and how they placed themselves as a paddler. That was super helpful. Keep up all the great work, we will keep telling lots of students about Lumpy!
-David

Paul-
Magnificent job with Lumpy 2015!

Paul,
Great conference, I plan on returning.
I liked courses, instructors, attendees, beer & atmosphere.
It was great ending on Sunday, attempting to surf at Netarts.
I want to get more surfing in this winter & hope to find someone from conference to go with. Maybe more lessons?
Best coaching experiences where when the coaches would adapt the lesson plan to each individual’s skill level.
Could be better: food.
Alan

Paul, Lumpy rocked. Last year was smooth, this year was pureed smooth. Can’t wait til next year!
Don

Suzi
I loved Lumpy and I’m very excited about my new Progression.
David

Thanks for putting together and amazing event; this year was great! Great coaches, great students, great classes and the ratio of coaches and assistant coaches and students was pretty amazing and made the challenging conditions possible!
I had a lot of fun and paddled my butt off and was thoroughly exhausted when i got home!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Alder Creek Kayak & Canoe acquires Ridgefield Kayak, LLC

Transaction keeps Ridgefield Kayak in local hands intent on continuing the “Spirit of Place”

 March 24, 2015

Portland, Oregon and Ridgefield, Washington – We are proud to announce that Dave Slover and Suzi Elle of Alder Creek Kayak & Canoe have acquired the assets and business operations of Ridgefield Kayaking from Gail Alexander. The two local kayak, canoe and SUP businesses have worked independently for years to share our local waterways and support active, healthy lifestyles. The transaction was facilitated by Paul Dickson of the Meriwether Group, a business acceleration firm and trusted brand advisor who stated:

“MWG prides itself on working with disruptive and iconic brands and founders and helping them on their journey in way that is in alignment with their brand ethos and culture – we are honored to have been able to assist with this great transition. Ridgefield Kayaking and Alder Creek are both locally owned and operated, founder driven and fast-growing, iconic Portland-area brands which reflect the outdoor culture of the northwest and the Portland-area in particular.  This sale allows for the Ridgefield brand and its customers to be placed in the hands of a trusted, local brand which values sustainability and a world-class outdoor experience.”

Alder Creek Kayak & Canoe, originally founded in 1986, has been a leading force in the Pacific Northwest paddle sports industry for many years. With two retail stores and now 4 rental/instructional centers, all of Alder Creek’s locations are positioned on the water. We can now provide quality paddle experiences on the Columbia River in Portland, OR, Ridgefield, WA, the Willamette River in downtown Portland, OR, and The Tualatin River at Browns Ferry Park, OR. With the acquisition of Ridgefield Kayak we have now opened the door to significantly expanding our offerings in the metro region. The Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge is a diverse and exceptional place to paddle.  Gail has led a team of gifted and talented professionals who love to share the outdoors. Ridgefield Kayak employees will remain with the company into the future and Alder Creek and Ridgefield look forward to learning from each other and expanding the opportunities available at The Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge, a great paddle location.

The sale of Ridgefield Kayaking culminates a 10 year journey for Gail Alexander. Starting with an idea to promote nature and the outdoors while sharing her passion for paddling, she built the business from scratch based on customer service and providing a quality experience in a scenic location. While Gail intends to “actually” retire she will still be apart of the activities and adventures at Ridgefield. She plans to focus on two events she has been integral in developing over the years: National Trails Day “Big Paddle” which occurs the first weekend in June and the Birdfest Bluegrass Celebration, an event that takes place in October each year.

Combining the operations of Alder Creek and Ridgefield Kayaking will create an economy of scale, making both operations run more efficiently. The ease of having boats on site at the Ridgefield boathouse adds another place where paddlers can get on the water and diversifies where Alder Creek operates. By keeping the business in local ownership, it assures that the commitments Gail Alexander has made to her employees, the environment and the community will be continued and developed into the future.
