The purpose of this class is introduce students to techniques that help prevent capsize and to get familiar with how to edge the boat. Anyone that wants to roll should start here. Students gain underwater comfort by doing wet exits and playing in an upside down boat while in the pool. We focus on understanding connections between boat and body. We will teach you the correct use of upper and lower body with the kayak on edge then add the paddle to achieve maximum effect. Come paddle through the winding waterways of the Columbia River Water Trail near the Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge for a few hours. Experience the beauty and fun of paddling Lake River. We can practice our paddling skills with the help of an experienced guide. A variety of birds and wildlife are sometimes seen as we slip around the puzzle pieces of land and explore paths once traveled by native tribes and Lewis and Clark. We will paddle Lake R and look for bald eagles and blue herons and so much more! As part of the tour, we will cover many basic paddling skills including launching, maneuvering, and how to stay safe on the water. First timers are always welcome as this is a great way to learn some fundamentals!

Have fun and explore part of The Willamette River Water Trail close to downtown Portland by kayak, canoe, or stand up paddle board on this guided tour! We meet at our instruction center at Tryon Cove in Lake Oswego. After some basic safety briefings and a few pointers on technique we launch from the beach and head up to Elk Rock Island just about a mile down river. We will paddle as a group learning about the area and picking up a few new skills along the way.

This half-day class, held on sheltered water, introduces deep-water rescue techniques for solo and group paddlers. The class covers techniques for solo re-entry of a kayak following a wet exit as well as assisted drain and re-enter rescues involving two or more paddlers. It also covers basic safety concerns and safety-related features of sea kayaks and paddling equipment.

In the classroom we discuss paddling safely, local destinations and equipment. On the water, we introduce the basic paddle strokes needed to efficiently move a kayak through the water. We encourage students to practice a deep water wet exit and an assisted re-entry which is a safety skill every paddler should own! A person completing this class is qualified to rent sea kayaks from Alder Creek Kayak & Canoe. Basic Skills Kayak Classes are offered every weekend year round and daily in the late spring, summer and early fall.

Full Immersion Kayak 2 picks up where Full Immersion Kayak 1 leaves off. We focus classroom time on river reading and hazards, pool time allows further exploration into edge control and roll techniques. Spend Saturday and Sunday on two local river runs polishing the principles of boat control. This is an excellent course for any paddler, looking to take beginning skills to the next level or dust off some skills that haven't been used in a while. Come paddle through the winding waterways of the Columbia River Water Trail near the Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge for a few hours. Experience the beauty and fun of paddling Lake River. We can practice our paddling skills with the help of an experienced guide. A variety of birds and wildlife are sometimes seen as we slip around the puzzle pieces of land and explore paths once traveled by native tribes and Lewis and Clark. We will paddle Lake R and look for bald eagles and blue herons and so much more! As part of the tour, we will cover many basic paddling skills including launching, maneuvering, and how to stay safe on the water. First timers are always welcome as this is a great way to learn some fundamentals!

* Strokes & Maneuvers Strokes & Maneuvers

Cause and effect relationships involved in boat control are introduced and students learn to perform maneuvers safely and efficiently. The class covers efficient forward and reverse paddling, a wide variety of strokes for turning, the use of edging to assist turning, rudder strokes for maintaining a course and draw strokes for moving sideways. Learn the correct techniques for torso rotation, catch, pull, lift, push and glide. Never underestimate the value of a good forward stroke. Go farther and faster with less energy!

The Basic Skill Fishing Kayak Class teaches you the essential paddling skills needed to successfully use a sit on top, or other recreational fishing kayak. While we aren't actively fishing in this class, you will go home with new skills that will greatly improve your maneuvering and efficiency.

* Bachelor Island TourBachelor Island Tour

This full day tour is one of our most popular foundation journeys. It is for anyone looking to improve their skills at paddling with a group in light current and mild conditions. This trip can be taken as a refresher or just for fun! The area we explore is part of the Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge and the bird watching is spectacular.
