In the classroom we discuss paddling safely, local destinations and equipment. On the water, we introduce the basic paddle strokes needed to efficiently move a kayak through the water. We encourage students to practice a deep water wet exit and an assisted re-entry which is a safety skill every paddler should own! A person completing this class is qualified to rent sea kayaks from Alder Creek Kayak & Canoe. Basic Skills Kayak Classes are offered every weekend year round and daily in the late spring, summer and early fall.

Come paddle through the winding waterways of the Columbia River Water Trail near the Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge for a few hours. Experience the beauty and fun of paddling Lake River. We can practice our paddling skills with the help of an experienced guide. A variety of birds and wildlife are sometimes seen as we slip around the puzzle pieces of land and explore paths once traveled by native tribes and Lewis and Clark. We will paddle Lake R and look for bald eagles and blue herons and so much more! As part of the tour, we will cover many basic paddling skills including launching, maneuvering, and how to stay safe on the water. First timers are always welcome as this is a great way to learn some fundamentals!

Cause and effect relationships involved in boat control are introduced and students learn to perform maneuvers safely and efficiently. The class covers efficient forward and reverse paddling, a wide variety of strokes for turning, the use of edging to assist turning, rudder strokes for maintaining a course and draw strokes for moving sideways. Time: 11:00 am

This half-day class, held on sheltered water, introduces deep-water rescue techniques for solo and group paddlers. The class covers techniques for solo re-entry of a kayak following a wet exit as well as assisted drain and re-enter rescues involving two or more paddlers. It also covers basic safety concerns and safety-related features of sea kayaks and paddling equipment.

This 1.5 day course is designed for those paddlers carrying out coastal journeys. The aim of this course is to give the student the tools to enable them to plan and navigate effectively on coastal waters

* Tipping without FlippingTipping without Flipping

Time: 7:00 pm

The purpose of this class is introduce students to techniques that help prevent capsize and to get familiar with how to edge the boat. Anyone that wants to roll should start here. Students gain underwater comfort by doing wet exits and playing in an upside down boat while in the pool. We focus on understanding connections between boat and body. We will teach you the correct use of upper and lower body with the kayak on edge then add the paddle to achieve maximum effect. The combat roll is an elusive but crucial skill that will open many doors and improve your confidence immensely. Explore and practice the physical and mental techniques needed to pull rolls off EVERY time you need them. We will discover how variation, bi-lateral repetition, and contextual interference can better ingrain the fundamental movements needed for rolling in dynamic water. We will begin rolling in The North Clackamas Aquatic Park wave pool then move into more and more challenging rolling situations on day 2! We are all between swims, but hopefully this clinic will make those swims less frequent and far less likely.

An Advanced whitewater class: We will establish a team dynamic and asses the students while laying some ground work and foundation skills in the beginning. As the day progresses, we will explore a range of topics based on the needs of the students. We will be working on a Grade IV river (East Fork Lewis sunset falls run, Opal Creek, and Canyon Creek are all possibilities).
