Sweet Protection is a Norwegian company located in Trysil. The company is based on a group of friends designing gear “for-riders by-riders”. This translates to gear that fits with style and performance. Most of the Alder Creek Staff owns a Sweet Helmet of some kind. The Strutter helmet is my favorite helmet at this point. I own the Strutter in pearl and have found that the fit is perfect. What I enjoy the most is the visor on sunny days.

My helmet has joined me down several well known class three runs on the Clackamas River in a white water kayak. I have also used this helmet kayaking surfing off the Oregon Coast. I have never had any problems with the whitewater helmet and really enjoy the feel and look of the helmet over any plastic white water helmet I have used. I feel safer in the composite Sweet Helmet because of the three layer system they utilize.

If there was a negative to this kayak helmet it would be the visor of the helmet.

This can get in the way of vision if yohttp://shop.aldercreek.com/photos/lg_454612.jpgu are trying to look upward.

For instance in play boating moves this could get it the way. Other than this minor detail we all really enjoy the helmet.

Golden Gate Kayak Symposium in San Francisco

From Sea Kayak Symposium

Precisely timed to match increasing tides and strong seasonal currents. Sea kayakers from around the world gathered across the bay from San Francisco for the first annual Golden Gate Sea Kayaking Symposium.  Offering advanced skills training and an incredible collection of talented coaches, the symposium granted opportunities for skill development in a dynamic ocean environment.

Centralized north of the city in Marin County, the venue was highlighted by the area’s historical significance and natural beauty preserved by the Golden Gate National Park. Despite the uncharacteristic high pressure system that created clear blue skies and balmy temperatures throughout the entire weekend, everyone seemed to enjoy themselves.

At days end, the full moon rose to create a stunning setting for those practicing their night navigation skills.

Evenings were shared with great food and inspiring slideshows that brought to life expeditions from around the world.
Classes such as rock gardening, tide races, navigation, tidal planning, technical skills and leadership training provided theoretical components that could be immediately applied by students for hands-on learning. For those seeking professional and leadership development, accomplished coaches of both the ACA (American Canoe Association) and the BCU (British Canoe Union) offered training and certifications.

Alder Creek employees Dave White (Buyer), Amanda Cantal (Coach), and Paul Kuthe (Program Dir.) were all fortunate enough to attend the event. Of the many paddling gatherings on the West Coast, I highly recommend this symposium for those who seek training opportunties and want to have a blast on the water. The multitude of highly skilled leadership figures gathered in one setting created a uniquely fun and informative event. We extend gratitude to all those who made the event happen and especially to symposium founders: Sean Morley, Jen Kleck and Matt Palmariello. http://www.ggsks.com/

Wave Sport Diesel 60 70 and 80 !!

Friday, January 23rd, 2009

As of last week Alder Creek Kayak and Canoe has three new Wavesport Kayaks. The new Diesel White Water Kayaks are here! The Wave Sport Diesel 60 is fit for the smaller paddler while the Wavesport Diesel 70 and Diesel 80 are more similar to the old 65 and 75. There are some great new features to this white water boat that make it faster, more predictable, and still has that same ol’ trusty feel as before.

As soon as the boats came to Alder Creek we noticed the differences right away. First of all the deck looks very different. Not asflat as before, helps to resurface, and keeps this boat feeling more comfortable if the bow or stern submerge. The change was in the peaked deck. The old Wave Sport Deisel had a flater stern deck that doesn’t resurface like  new design.

The Wavesport Diesel is a faster boat because of the modified rocker and flared sidewalls in the bow and stern. This translates to a faster kayak and one that my feel more maneuverable while surfing or running the river.
